Hi guys, today we’ll make a delicious Chinese treat called Thangulu. It similar to a candy apple, but made with different fruits. I’ve found strawberries to be the most common, but you can also make it with grapes, mandarin oranges kiwis and also apples if you want. I have grapes and strawberries handy so today I’ll be using those. You can make it with whatever is in season or any fruit you have in your fridge. First off I am going to wash and pat dry my fruits thoroughly with a paper towel. I then cut the strawberry stems off. Then we line up the fruit on the skewer one by one. Now that the fruit is ready, it’s time to make the syrup that we’ll use to coat them. We’ll add 200 grams of granulated sugar and 120 ml of water in our pan and start heating It’s important to remember to not mix the syrup at this stage. We just wait for the sugar to start melting and for bubbles to start forming We need to be patient at this point, because if we don’t wait long enough and remove the syrup from the fire at the right time, it won’t harden well and won’t stick on the fruit we’re coating. When the sugar in your mixture starts to turn a slight amber color, take a spoonful and pour it into a cold glass of water. If you see that the sugar hardens nicely in the cold water, you’ll know that the syrup is ready. Remove the syrup from the stove right away. Some of the recipes I’ve seen have corn syrup in it, I decided against using it in my recipe since I don’t use corn syrup as an ingredient in any of my recipes and I didn’t go buy it just for this recipe. I didn’t think most people would have it readily available in their homes either so I made it with just sugar and water. In addition, if you are going to make it with only strawberries you can add a little bit of food coloring for some added brightness and color. Remove your pan from the stove and start dipping your fruits in the syrup. You need to be quick with this step as the syrup will start to harden when removed from the heat. I now place the sugar coated fruit on a wire rack. You can also place these on a piece of parchment paper until they cool down. That’s pretty much it! They tend to cool down fairly quickly and are soon ready to eat. Let’s get tasting! Our Tanghulu candy is ready to eat! I’ve seen that people always taste the strawberry one in the videos. I want to taste the grape first instead. (…crunch crunch crunch…????????) Very crunchy and quite hard on the shell. You might feel it on your teeth a little bit It’s really tasty though, kind of like candy apple. You know how candied apple is just slightly tart in taste I feel that balances the taste out a bit. Here the grapes themselves are very sweet so overall it’s a bit too sweet for me but it’s a new taste Worth giving it a try That’s it for today! I hoped you enjoyed this recipe.
