  1. Our reunions were always these foods
Field peas, black eyed peas, hot water corn bread, blueberry yumyum, Italian wedding cake, roast a whole pig, devilled eggs—dozens of them, fried chicken, turkey salad for my grandaddy cuz he loved it, garbage can (new) full of chopped collards and turnip greens
Tables groaning full of food all weekend.
We just ate n talked for 3 solid days while kids played and had slip n slides (held on a farm so had whole huge yards n house)
I miss those and the holidays gatherings before that when we wee little. Everybody’s gone now except for some older ones who can’t. My gen doesn’t have any interest in doing it w/o older ones involved. Plus we would have to rent a venue instead of being homey (and three days long!) too many live too far to come for that small of a thing. 10 kids, dozens of cousins and they’re grandparents now…

  2. Man! This could be my New Year’s meal. Once a year only because it is special to me from my family New Year celebrations. Fried chicken too. lol. And potato salad. The only drawback is I couldn’t eat much of any one thing. And the cornbread! Wow, I have never seen this recipe. But really, I couldn’t eat but one delicious bite. Kudos

  3. Oh, man! What a feast of southern cooking! While you're southern, I'm more european, and grew up with my grandma making kielbasa, pierogis, cabbage rolls, borscht soup, etc in Brooklyn. Now that I'm in Phoenix, I get the privilege of experiencing the vast cultures and cooking styles here. It's good to explore, while keeping home recipes and memories close. Real nice sentimental video and thank you for sharing. Cheers! Pete in Arizona – KI7LIL

  4. I'm going to be a bit controversial here. I really wonder if our original descendants would really be happy with us eating what we call traditional soul food. Remember this isn't the food they chose but the food that was thrown to them. I always wondered if they could see us and talk to us would they be yelling at us "STOP IT, EAT LIKE THE KINGS AND QUEENS YOU ARE!!"

  5. Amen! The Lord is great! I don’t care what you cook…I love watching your videos! I love when you share your family history behind the recipes…it helps those of not familiar to become appreciative of the tradition. I love your show…you are the best❣️🤗

  6. Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! 🤗That is authentic to the bone! Haven't had food like that in many years! My husband doesn't like the smell of chitterlings so I never had the pleasure of cooking it. Plus we don't eat pork any more (although I sneak bacon now & then) and the pickled onions accompanying it and hot sauce… 👍🏽! (Chef's kiss) Not everyone can make flavorful chitterlings but my maternal gma made all that and home made hog head cheese magnificent! Thanks so much for sharing this southern heritage American meal! Dee, NY
